Music for voice by William Byrd
‘He is an honour to our nation,’ Henry Peacham wrote of William Byrd in his book ‘The Compleat Gentleman’. This was no self-evident acclaim, since Byrd was not just regarded as a celebrated composer during his life, but was also an outcast. He was an outspoken Catholic at a time when the Anglican Church of England defined the nation’s identity. Nevertheless, his genius as a composer secured him a position with the Chapel Royal as well as a monopoly to publish music from the Crown. However, his religion ultimately led to him being driven out of his job because he belonged to the ‘recusants’, a congregation that was regarded as almost criminal for their refusal to attend Anglican services.
His music reflects this very turbulent period in English history, from the detached perfection of his Latin masses by way of the sweet domesticity of his consort music to the daring rebelliousness of masterpieces such as Infelix Ego and Ne Irascaris.
